61' pilothouse yacht
61’ PILOT HOUSE YACHT

This yacht was designed as a long-distance family cruiser. Intended generally to be used by two couples, and rarely more than six persons, the degree of comfort was expected to be higher than usual. All functions can be easily handled by the owner and his wife.

It has been a great pleasure to work with the owner who is an experienced yachtsman. In some cases his expectations at first seemed too high, only later to turn out realistic. The design process took more than two years.

The interior is unusually airy and the pilot house will certainly be a favourite spot on board with its unobstructed outside view. There are two settees which can also be arranged as sea berths, and a coffee table which can be extended to be used as an upstairs dining table for a small company.

The inside steering position at the forward end allows the helmsman to stay relaxed, warm and dry – which often means he or she will be able to concentrate better, so this is also a safety factor. The navigation station has full-size chart drawers and room for all instruments. Still, the helmsman can simply swing around in his chair to enjoy the company in the pilot house.

The pilot house is also open to a great part of the downstairs interior. To port, there is a staircase to a lobby area having a locker for foul weather gear, a daytime w.c./washroom, and a small cabin with two sea berths. Forward, there is the staircase to the main cabin and dining saloon. Between these areas is a vast galley which is also open to the deckhouse which means there is 2,8 m (9,2’) headroom.

There is eye contact between the galley, the pilothouse and the cockpit and surroundings so the person or persons cooking will still be very much part of life on board. The galley is laid out with workspace on each side and is fully equipped with fridge, freezer, 4-burner cooker with oven, a microwave, huge worktop and locker space and also room for a dishwasher. Under the floors is a wine storage.

The owner’s cabin aft has a writing desk, a sofa and good locker space as well as a queen-size double. There is a private exit to the aft deck. The bathroom can be laid out with an en-suite shower or steam shower with one or two seats inside (in hull #1, there is a combined Jacuzzi / shower).

The size of the forward guest cabin area permits a flexible layout equally suitable for twin guest cabins with upper / lower berths, sharing a bathroom forward.

Still, there will be occasions when another couple might wish to join her. Or, during passages, the owners might wish to bring an extra hand to relieve the daily chores. The small seaberth cabin will serve these situations well.

The position of the cockpit near the companionway, protected by the pilothouse, makes it ideal for handling the boat in any weather. All sail handling can be carried out from here, using electric or hydraulic winches and the remotely controlled furling gear for all 3 sails. Immediately aft of the cockpit, however, the coamings continue right aft, surrounding a sun deck – a place to relax, for reading, or gathering for dinner under the shade of the bimini, using the built-in folding seats. Or, during night watches, counting the stars…

For handling under power, the yacht is equipped not only with a bowthruster but also a sternthruster which makes it easy to park the yacht or leave a dock with precision. Cruising speed under engine 8_-9 knots, maximum speed under sail 10-10,2 knots.

The dinghy or RIB can be carried in davits but the aft deck is also large enough to carry a 10 ft. RIB on deck. The transom folds down, forming a boarding platform with easy access to diving gear & other paraphernalia.

A lot of attention has been given to the engine room. Situated beneath the pilothouse this contains the engine, the generator in its sound-proofed housing, the watermaker, the possible central heating and cooling systems, hydraulic units and pumps. All installations can be reached for maintenance; there is room for many back-up systems, the water intake has a central manifold with its top above water level for cleaning.

In the engine room, there is also a comprehensive workshop for servicing all installations. Above this part of the engine room, there is a large deck hatch.

Tank volumes are in excess of 800 gallons of fuel and 360 gallons of water. In conjunction with the watermaker, this will make the yacht self-contained for long periods of time.
The first yacht was built as a weight saving steel-alu construction in Holland and is now being finished in Göteborg. The construction drawings are approved by Lloyd’s. A sister ship could be built using the same materials, although we feel that an all-aluminium construction or GRP are strong alternatives, for simplicity.

A first-class yacht can be built to this design by a number of yards for example in Western Europe, USA or New Zealand. Because the drawings already exist, considerable time will be saved in the planning and pre-production stages and building time could be limited to between one or two years, depending on the yard’s capacity.
